My leadership situation isn't that unique, but it can be challenging: I'm the CEO of a small company, but not the business owner. This isn't the first time I've been a part of this delicate corporate dance, but it's currently the best iteration I've experienced by far. The familiar challenge in small businesses occurs when leaders who are responsible for making actionable decisions are, at times, stymied by the prerogative (often personal, internal, and not communicated) of the business owner, who may or may not have any engagement in the day-to-day operations. I've discovered a few ways to work on resolving that tension and discuss it HERE.
On a lighter note, I've often wondered if I'm the only one who experiences the humorous ways in which business owners often have the best intentions, yet through the frequent interruptions and distractions in a day, miss the follow-through. I've decided I would like to carry around a pack of gold star stickers ☆ and award them to our owner for the successful completion of tasks (ie. email follow-ups, client resolutions, talking to the person they said they would, etc.). Then we could add them to their hard hat like a football player receiving stickers for tackles or touchdowns.
